MDFR hosts search and rescue K9 certification course

 


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) will be hosting the Federal Emergency Management Agencies (FEMA), Search and Rescue K9 Certification Course on Saturday, January 25th, through Sunday, January 26, 2014. The course will be held at the MDFR Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Training Facility located at 7950 SW 107th Avenue from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sixteen USAR K9 Teams will travel to Miami this weekend to participate in a certification course which is known to be one of the most difficult and demanding disciplines in the realm of working with dogs.  The K9s and their handlers will each get 20 minutes to locate up to six victims hidden in the rubble pile and mark them correctly. Adding to the level of difficulty, distractions such as food, toys and articles of clothing will be scattered throughout the search site. Each K9 and their handler must pass this rigorous course every three years.

Media Note:  Visitors to the USAR facility should wear closed comfortable athletic shoes or work boots.
